Week in Review

Phew, its finally Friday
for whatever reason, this week DRAGGED..

I had some training in Puunene this week which is right next to the
sugar factory (where they process the cane sugar after they burn it)
and felt like I had stepped back in time to a Hawaiian plantation.
The old plantation style school with cane burning behind it.

Church across the street
note the dirt roads.
My car did NOT like the potholes everywhere.

New(er) school, not a school anymore
used for Department of Education offices and training

Everyday I'm learning something new about Hawaii and Hawaiian culture
it's amazing to see how different their history is in comparison with the rest of the US
Makes sense since they've only been a state for 60 year
but not something I thought about until now..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a totally different track,
I decided to use my winnings from the Retro Flowers QAL
to get me some Chicopee!

Seriously love.
I'm planning to pair these with what I have left from Hope Valley for a Supernova quilt!

After seeing Dianne's I was sold on the idea.

So, actually sewing this week?
10 arcs for my DWR so i'm still on track :)
I also managed to get Kelsey to join!
Woohoo!

Alright, that's all i've got
3 day weekend and boyfriend will be gone all Monday, golfing.
So, unless I cave and go to the beach, i'll sew :)

Precious QAL

I'm a bit late out of the gate on this one, but I realized when I was working on my
(D)ouble (W)adding (R)ing Quilt that the fabric I was using fit into this category!

I decided to use "Fandango" by Kate Spain
I came across this fabric after they stopped producing it (of course)
but I was able to get my hands on some nice sized pieces

Then, the ever fabulous Jess offered to add to my Fandango supply

And here is where we're at - 22 arcs pieced, only 58 to go
unless I decide to make a bigger quilt, then I need more..

I'm so excited to see this quilt come together, it's so bright and cheery!
Happy Tuesday

Monday again!?

Whew, the weekends are just going too fast, make that the entire week! This weekend my baby sister moved back into her college dorm for her last semester!!! I couldnt be more proud of her, graduating in 3.5 years and then leaving for Missouri in the Spring to start.. get this.. farrier school?! Yeh, not sure where she came from, but we love her anyway :)

I was hit with a surge of motivation on Saturday and quickly started/finished
a quilt for my brother's girlfriend..
She sent me a box of t-shirts almost immediately after I moved..
and there they sat, until now!

Backed with cozy flannel, and made using her favorite t-shirts
These quilts are becoming a favorite they come togehter so quickly
I'm also happy to have gotten this finished and shipped home because these arrived at my door yesterday..

dun dun dun
Let's see how long this one takes
;)

W.i.P.

What? I have a W.i.P ?!
Well, I have works in progress that are goals..

1. DWR arcs - 12 down, 10 more this week

PLUS, the amazing Jess saw that I was using Fandango and
graciously offered to send me some scraps
I greedily immediately accepted!
All cut up and ready to go!

2. Night and Day quilt - these are squares made by the talented ladies of the We Bee Modern Too bee

I have a few more to finish up
then i'm making some to add to the bunch
I'm thinking this needs some gray/ash sashing to tone down the busy-ness
thoughts?

3. Mystery Project
Sorry, no pictures, recipient reads the blog
but you can see them through my instagram
follow me at
knotted_thread

4. 3x6 quilt blocks
I'd like to get the test block done this week

5. We Bee Modern Too - August
done!

6. do.good stitches - August
no progress.

Lastly,
A new blog hop i'd like to tell you about.

Soma is running it and she has roped me in convinced me I can do it
She's running an October paper piecing event where everyday a new blog will post an original paper pieced pattern for free, that is affiliated with Halloween.
Now, I personally have NEVER made my own pattern, however,
with Soma in my corner, I think i'll give it a shot
Go check it out, she's got some more spaces to fill
She's welcoming everyone, newbies, intermediates, and advanced so if your
looking to push yourself outside your comfort zone like me to improve your ability
jump on board, we can help each other!
:)

As always, i'm linking up with Lee

Epiphany

So I realized today.. that YESTERDAY was my one year anniversary of blogging -- ironic since i've been feeling that i'm in a slump, its only fitting I actually miss the day completely.. whoops!

Story of my life haha

Well, since I'm not a sponsored blog or anything
but I would like to say THANK YOU
to everyone who has supported me, inspired me and helped me grow
both personally and quilty related,
I would like to do something for you.

So, simply leave a comment
and i'll let the winner give me 3 options
(fabric, pouch, etc etc.)
of something they'd like and i'll choose one to go forward with..

And because no post is complete without a picture,
this is what my view was on my drive to work..

I don't think i'll ever get used to the sugar cane burning
I freaked out the first time I saw it
Now, if I don't see it twice a week thats a lot..
The school I work at is less than a mile from that
makes for a very smokey morning

Anyway!
One entry per person.
Open until Sunday August 26th
8pm PST

Luck!

Minor Progress

Woohoo, this weekend I was able to get some things done!
I think i've realized the problem.. Picture this..

Sunny and 84-90 degrees typically..
no air conditioning..
kitchen and living space/sewing space essentially in the same room
throw a hot iron into the mix..
making for a really warm atmosphere right?
Ugh I've realized any ironing needs to happen from 8pm on
which isn't super conducive to sewing..
Anyone else tired of my whining? hehe i'm done, promise!

Anyway,

Finished Nicole's block
for August for We Bee Modern Too

Also completed my 10 arcs for this week
as a sew along i'm doing with Rebecca
though, I think the heat got to me, I just realized there are 12 in this picture..
:)

Anyway, thats it for the week
if you follow me on instagram
(knotted_thread)
you know what's been occupying my time and will continue to do so!

Bowls with Borders

Today I get to show you something as a part of the Bowls with Borders blog hop - there are over 165 talented people participating!

It started on Monday, August 13th and
a full list of the participants is here

This pattern was great!
Easy to understand, and the possibilities are endless!

I wasn't able to have a completed project due to the move
and lack of batting
but I think that might be better,
I'm thinking I need some more stacks of bowls to accompany this one..

Be sure to check out the other participants today!
August 18th

Enjoy the weekend!

Friday do Over!

Hey all,
Follower Friday has taken a hiatus recently
with summer and my personal life becoming a bit crazy..

I'd really like to start these posts up again though
probably not until September, so everyone can enjoy
their last month of summer.

I will however start taking more volunteers.
If Follower Friday is new to you, here's how it works.
Every Friday I feature a follower of mine.
It's an interview set-up and we include pictures of your fabulous work
so both myself and other people can learn more about you!

It's a great way to meet new people and learn more about the
blogger "friends" you have been stalking following for a while.

If you'd like, check out some of our previous features
herehereherehere and here
(all randomly selected)

If this is something you feel you'd be interested in doing
please email me at

I'd love to get to know you better,
after all isnt that what the blogging community is about??

Happy weekend everyone!

Pick Your Plum

I came across this website a few weeks back and have been
keeping an eye on it before I show it to all of you..

These lovely goodies arrived at my door this weekend
I'm definitely a lover of bakers twine, but i'm unwilling to pay the high prices for a roll of it.
So, when I saw them being advertised on Pick Your Plum
I knew I had to snatch them!

If you've never heard of this website, I recommend checking it out
they send a daily deals (M-F) to your email
The products range, all things crafty related at much lower prices
They ship fast and you can order up to 8 of the given product.

(Pick your Plum did not ask me to review their website, I just genuinely like it and wanted to share!)

Any other websites like this that you all subscribe too?
Let me know!

Weekend Recap

Something about this place
maybe its the island aspect, makes me feel like i'm on a perpetual vacation
and in thinking that.. the lack of sewing is ridiculous

Instead of sewing,
This is how I spent my weekend..

Gotta love the awkward, backwards camera pictures
Friday was date night in Lahaina

Maui has "Maui Fridays" every Friday night
Lahaina is the 2nd Friday of every month
The restaurants offer awesome deals and live entertainment in the streets
definitely something to experience!

Saturday was a beach day :)

Sea turtles close enough you could touch

don't worry we didn't !

Starting to see my problem with the perpetual vacation?
If you follow on instagram I've been showing some work that I am doing
Holiday work though so I can't blog about it!

I'm locking myself in the apartment today and getting some sewing done
hopefully..

Have a great week everyone

W.i.P. Wednesday

It's been a long time since I linked up for this, but here goes nothing!
Summer is OVER here, school started last week
and after ending late on the east coast and starting VERY early in the Pacific
Summer was basically nonexistent..

1. DWR Quilt

My DWR arc pieces are cut and ready to go --
who knew a friendly push could help as much as it did

My lack of sewing is a bit frustrating,
hopefully more sewing this week..

:)

DWR Project

This weekend, Rebecca and I decided to team up and help each other out in our pursuits to complete a Double Wedding Ring quilt. I've been eyeing the QAL that The Plaid Scottie hosted some time back and I finally decided to take the plunge (slowly) and put it on my Three Things for the month of August.

We decided to set weekly goals and check in with each other to keep the other on track. This week, we're gathering supplies and cutting the fabric for the arcs. I started pulling fabric, I've been hoarding some Fandango that I wanted to use for this.

Then, I started looking for my 2 fabrics for my "intersection squares"
Kailyn explains this well on her blog

(photo from The Plaid Scottie)

I pulled a bunch of fabrics, but I need help!

The fabrics on the bolts are the possible choices

I'm leaning towards the blue and green

but maybe the orange?

Thoughts? Help? Please?
:)

Just Three

I've never participated in this before,
but since the move i'm finding it hard to be motivated
but 3 goals in a month seems super attainable, so I figured I'd give it a try.

1. Finish do.good quilt from APRIL !
tops done, waiting on backing and batting

2. Finish polka dot beach blanket

3. Start working on my DWR quilt
(taking this one slow, but i'd like to get started)

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Testing, Testing..

I've fallen into a bit of a sewing slump, not sure if its a result of the move, new place, new sewing space, etc etc but I did have some commitments i've been working on I wanted to show..

Julie over at Distant Pickles put out a request a few weeks ago for some pattern testers. I jumped at the  chance, especially when I saw her pattern..
CURVES!
After having such a great time with the Retro Flowers
i jumped right in..

I actually printed the pattern, chose my fabrics and boxed it up, the day before I moved
so it arrived once I was settled with my machine and ready to go
Here's what I came up with..

I chose to keep it small and do the baby size quilt
despite initial trouble with the template size (Julie's worked out the kinks!)
it was a great pattern and came together relatively quickly

I'd definitely recommend it when Julie makes it available
I love how it gives you the chance for contrast in your colors
but both the blue and yellow (in my case) are dominant and stand out!

Julie has graciously offered to give a pattern to one of you!
All you need to do is leave me a comment.
That's it!
Giveaway will be open until Wednesday August 8th
7:30am PST

Good luck!
