W.i.P.

Little engine that could is back once more.. slow and steady wins the race.. I completed all of my February Finishes for my Year of Lovely finishes back on Monday so I decided to give myself 3 days for "fun" sewing before March started with more commitments and projects to be completed.

Finished Projects:
1. Year of Lovely Finishes - February - postage stamp quilt is the new one this week
Mod Pop Quilt

15 Hexies

Postage Stamp Quilt

Works in Progress:
1. Spools for Sewing Room - no progress. broke my FMQ'ing foot, waiting on a replacement.
2. Honeycomb Stitch Along - no progress.
3. Commission Quilts  - quilt #1 finished. quilt #2 shirts are cut and waiting on backing to arrive.. waiting on quilt #3 to arrive!

New Projects
1. Since I finished all my February commitments early, I gave myself 3 days to work on my "fun sewing"  (more on this soon!)

2. Pattern Testing - I have a patten i'm testing for a friend, needs to be done in a month but i'd rather get moving on it now so i'll be starting asap.

Future W.i.P.  - These are the projects that were put on the back burner and will be reappearing, but aren't "new" projects
1. DWR Quilt - Finished my arcs, now to cut my melons and get piecing
2. We Bee Modern Too Quilt - no progress.
3. Vintage Holiday - no progress.
4. Heirloom Quilt - no progress.

Two more weeks of school... then spring break and 2 weeks off!! Woohooo!
Lots planned in that time off! I cant wait!

ROYGBV

I wrapped up my last finish for my Lovely Finishes - February last night and I couldn't wait to blog about it! I've been giving sneak peaks on IG for a week or so now. My Simply Color postage stamp quilt in its entirety.. Sorry for the nighttime shots I was SO excited I couldn't wait for good lighting to take a better shot..

I think I like the backing on this even more than the front.. I saw Elizabeth's quilt back in December and knew I'd do something similar, its part of the reason I made this quilt. Then, I decided I needed to make sure I did some quilting that would really pop on a solid backing..

I went with the "orange peel" which is a bit wonky in places, but all in all, i'm super pleased with how it turned out... best part, I used my walking foot for it!! (I had a mishap with my fmq'ing foot a week ago, that ended with a needle through the plastic guard... how, no idea.)

I pulled a gray from the Life in the Jungle line to bind it with, I wanted something simple that it wouldn't take away from the quilt, but nothing too boring.

My plan was to list this quilt in my etsy shop.... butttttttt, i've changed my mind, it's mine! haha

Quilt Stats
Quilt Pattern: postage stamp quilt
Size: approx. 50"x 68"
Quilted By: Myself using "orange peel"
Completed on : February 25, 2013

Mod Pop QAL - Finish!

This quilt was a labor of love from start to finish. I initially started this quilt as a pattern tester for Julie but it was also the first quilt top I made after our move to Maui. I had signed on to test the pattern before I had really processed that I would be moving 6000 miles away from my family and friends; I think part of me signed on because I knew it would be a commitment I would see through and it would be something to keep me busy. But once I finished the top, it went into the closet not to be seen again for a long time.

Some of you may remember the tough time I had last summer and some of you even spoke with me personally about your own personal moves and the difficulties that go with it when you're adjusting to new surroundings, new cultures, etc. etc. I wasn't in the right frame of mind to finish this, but the colors channeled the sun and water for me.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago. I'm well adjusted now and just slacking off, so I decided to dust it off and get it finished. When I was basting and quilting this quilt I was trying to decide what I should do with it, should I sell it? Save it for a baby gift? Then... it hit me.

The reason my boyfriend and I were able to pick up and live this adventure is because initially of an opportunity presented to us by my dad.

Steve and I decided that as we start to close our year on Maui and decide what we want to do next (whether it be move back to NJ, stay in Maui for longer, etc. etc) we wanted to make sure my dad knew just how much we appreciated the "once in a lifetime" opportunity he presented us with. He trusted us individually and as a couple to not only survive and thrive in this situation. Whatever comes next, we're never forget the love and support we received from him on this adventure...

So, we sent some Maui sun and sea to him to wrap in aloha during the cold winter they're experiencing on the east coast. Whatever happens after this year, he will have this blanket and whenever he wraps himself up in it, he will know how much Steve and I love him and appreciate him for everything he does.

After all, isnt that what quilts are for?

We're back for more this week!
We have another

Welcome Kara!!!

Specs:
Name: Kara Sanders
Family: I live with my partner and our kitties, Michael and Jackson. I’m extramely close to my mom, sister and brother-in-law and ESPECIALLY my twin nieces who are 9 years old and my nephew who turns 6 in February.
Location: Just outside of Cincinnati, OH

Twitterhttps://twitter.com/me_and_elna
Instagram: me_and_elna

Day job: I work in training and development at a large construction company.
Dream job: I’m fortunate that I really enjoy my job! It’s very different from my hobbies which enables me not to get bored with either very easily. :)

Favorites:
Place: I love London! I went there for the first time last spring and fell in love
Movie: “Steel Magnolias”- don’t talk about me like I’m not here!
Food: I studied in Spain twice as a teenager and really love mediterranean food! Fresh fish, doughy bread, salads with olive oil and vinegar... yum!

[planking in Spain]

Way to spend a Friday night: With my partner, Heather, at our favorite local pizza shop (bacon, red onions and bleu cheese on olive oil sauce for me!) followed by a movie at home

Fabric line: Chicopee by Denyse Schmidt
Color: light blue
Designer: Oh gosh, that’s a hard question! Probably Melody Miller; her designs are so fun and she loves Pyrex as much as me!

Project completed by you: Jeni Baker's (In Color Order) drawstring bag. The pattern comes in so many sizes so it's great to  make for people as a gift bag that they can then also counts as part of the gift. I have so many of them myself... I'm sitting at work right now with one next to me that I use as a lunchbag! :)

Project when you need a quick finish: baby quilt made with a charm pack. Very simple to make but the look is so pretty!

Least Favorites:
Color: I’m not a huge fan of brown
Fabric line: I don’t really care for novelty prints... can’t think of a line that I detest!

BIG plans for 2013?? Hopefully finishing graduate school or at least seeing a light at the end of the tunnel!!! :)

Thank you Kara for joining us!!!

W.i.P.

I feel like the "Little Engine That Could" lately with my works in progress. I'm slowly chugging along, but ticking things off the list. My "want to do" list is growing by leaps and bounds, but thankfully i'm sticking my ground and finishing off things first..

Finished Projects
1. Mod Pop Quilt - woohoo! I got this one quilted on Sunday, bound on Monday and in the mail to the recipient on Tuesday! Full reveal after its received.

Works in Progress:
1. Hexie Snowflakes - i have about 6 done for this month, 9 more to go (definitely slower than my January progress!)

2. Simply Color Postage Stamp Quilt - this bad boy is basted and I started the quilting, but its definitely going to be a slowwww go - I'm trying "orange peel" for the first time

I apologize for the pictures, all the walls in out apartment are YELLOW, it makes for some funky coloring in images..

3. Spools for Sewing Room - no progress.
4. Honeycomb Stitch Along - are you participating?! I can't wait to get started!

Future W.i.P.  - These are the projects that were put on the back burner and will be reappearing, but aren't "new" projects
1. DWR Quilt - I need to paper piece some more arcs, cut my melons and get piecing
2. We Bee Modern Too Quilt - using quilt blocks from my round as bee momma
3. Commission Quilts  - I have 3 orders with material on the way to me now, so once they arrive I need to get moving
4. Vintage Holiday - I started blocks for a quilt for myself after making one for my mom, but didn't finish, I decided not to wait until the holidays this year.. never enough time!
5. Heirloom Quilt -

I have Monday off so hopefully i'll make it a productive day (or go lay on the beach) haha
As always, I'm linking up with Lee

Honey, it's Finished

Well, I just remembered that I never shared my finished Honey Honey baby quilt with all of you! I received word yesterday that it was delivered safely and not a moment too soon as the Christening is this weekend!

I used 2 different prints from Honey Honey for each of the stars and used

I struggled with how to quilt this quilt because of the negative white spaces and many of you jumped to help with awesome ideas! I wish I had more time to quilt this!

I ended up with double straight diagonal lines, simple and crisp
I bound it with some ombre simply color in pink to pick up the various shades of pink in the line.

Overall, I was very pleased with how this came out
and the customer was happy too which makes it even better!

all materials for the quilt are available in my shop

I find that i'm usually super unsure and hesitant when it comes to commission quilts, even more so when they say "whatever you want" as this one did. I know i'm a decent quilter, but when i'm making for other people I like to make sure their vision comes through for the gift and not just mine.. Anyone else have this problem? How do you get around it!?

Whirlwind

Phew. Ever have one of those weekends when you are more tired at the end of it, then when it started?! That sums up my past weekend.

Most Saturdays boyfriend and I head into town, meaning Kahului where we drop the dog off for adoption days (since we're fostering, every weekend its possible we wont come back with her). When we arrived we found out there was a Chinese New Year celebration! Good for us, bad for our terrified, super shy, skittish dog.

In the car.. sometimes, I think she thinks she's human, what dog sits like that! For a solid 40 minutes too..weirdo :)

Boyfriend got called into work so we booked it back to the west side and I couldnt even tell you what I did the rest of the day..

Sunday I had my massive destash on Instagram (@knotted_thread -- if you dont follow, you should think about it! I'm constantly listing random fq bundles and deals from the shop!) That kept me busy most of the morning/midday

Thanks everybody for helping me clean out my sewing studio!!

I spent the rest of the day quilting, quilting, quilting..
Hoping to have this done this week, bound and off to its new owner!

Even though it was an exhausting weekend.. i'm happy to report I didnt have to shovel one speck of snow! hahaha (sorry east coast friends! It was much nicer looking at it through your pictures than dealing with it in person!)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On an unrelated note, twenty-thr3e precuts arrived on Saturday
Summerville Spring and Serenata should be arriving anyday!

This week is the last week to take advantage of our Notting Hill Valentines Day special as well!

:)
