March - Year of Lovely Finishes Recap

Whew, this month I was able to get 2 of my goals finished, so I consider that to be a success!

Slow and steady seems to be my motto this year as i'm chugging along working on projects, ticking them off my list. It's a wonderful feeling!!

1. March - Snowflake Hexies -- 15 more this month - boyfriend keeps asking when am I going to have "enough" -- who knows! I'm loving the process though..

2. We Bee Modern Too quilt - done!

Now, to think about my April list... hmmm

Weekend Recap

Well, there was minimal sewing done this weekend... with good reason! Boyfriend and I headed over to the Big Island to spend the weekend exploring for my 25th birthday. We left Friday morning and spent all day Friday in Kona. We flew in on a commuter flight.. definitely the smallest plane i've ever been on!

First stop upon landing.. why the Kona Brewery of course!

We spent the rest of the day exploring and enjoying the area. For those of you that have been to Maui (more specifically Lahaina) i'm sure you've experienced Front St. with all their local shops/restaurants, etc. We found a similar place in Kona on Alii Ave.

We stayed at the Royal Kona Resort which is an older hotel, but the view was amazing!!

We had only intended to stay one night on the Big Island, but Saturday (my birthday) I realized at around 8am we hadn't gotten our confirmation for our 10pm flight out that night. We were also in the middle of a 3 hour trek across the island to Hilo for the day. After MANY phone calls and arguing, it was determined that Pacific Wings (our airline) had simply cancelled our flight and never rescheduled us. Keep in mind Saturday started Spring Break for college students on Hawaii... which means there were no flights out until TUESDAY. Cue anxiety and stress..
(sidenote - do NOT travel with Pacific Wings, we've heard nothing but horror stories everytime we mention it to people on Maui!!)

We made it to Hilo and decided to completely forget about what was going on to enjoy our hour helicopter ride, since this is the one thing i've have been wanting to do since moving to Hawaii..

Just a little background. Kilauea has been erupting since 1983, and the Big Island has gained over 475 acres of land in the past 30 years. So it is the largest island, but also considered the "youngest" -- Though the lava is "slow moving" in the Mauna Loa eruption in 1984 it covered 20 miles in 24 hours... scary thought. Even scarier.. scientists say that the volcanoes (3 active on Big Island) have one more explosion that will devastate the entire island before they become extinct..

Older lava flows completely wiping out vegetation.

slow flows..

Where the lava meets the Pacific..

Lava flows left from the Hilo eruption in 1983

If you ever get to the Big Island, or are visiting Hawaii and can island hop for a day... get to Hilo and get in a helicopter. It was amazing and something I will never forget. (We used Blue Mountain Helicopters, they have tours on all the islands and were great!)

Well, after this, back to the drama. My parents were able to track down some flights for us and we booked one for Sunday morning to get back to Maui, but we still needed to leave from Kona (3 hours away). We decided to go to take the northern route back to Kona and stopped at Akaka Falls on the way for a short hike..

note the sidekick tote.. I love how much it fits! Great bag!

For those that don't follow on instagram (@knotted_thread) if you're interested..  My dad, for as long as I can remember has had flowers delivered to the house for me for my birthday. This is the first birthday I wasnt living at home. He and boyfriend worked together and had the most gorgeous, fragrant, flower lei delivered to the hotel.

I still can't get over that people make these..

All in all, even with the headaches of the flight... what an amazing weekend.
Back to the real world this week, with some work days and sewing deadlines

We'll be back to our regularly scheduled sewing programming later this week :)

W.i.P. Spring Break Style

I'm taking full advantage this spring break, working on anything and everything i've had sitting around waitinggggg to be completed. Don't worry, i'm enjoying myself too though!

So far, i've got 3 quilt tops completed and i'm working on my 4th, nothing major, just some designs i've been wanting to try for a long time.. I've been playing with some mirror dots.. seriously, this top just screams "princess" to me haha

orbit QAL top

can't show you this one as i'm pattern testing for a friend
(excuse the terrible lighting from my cell phone)

I've been doing a bit of this..

all the while being kept company by this face
my ironing board is right in front of her face, i'm terrified she's going to get too close!

 Then i'm playing with these..

Making some long overdue sidekick totes
as well as another little something new..

Well, for 3 days in, i'm feeling pretty confident with how i've been doing

Boyfriend and I are headed to the big island this weekend.
My birthday is Saturday, so we'll be spending it in a helicopter checking out a volcano
:) :)

Here's to a productive rest of the week
next week i'll be basting and quilting everything! yuck!

Spring Break!!

Woohoo, it's finally spring break in these parts and I cannot wait!! I spent the weekend relaxing and resting so that I could hit the ground running this week, I have a lot of things I want to accomplish!

I managed to get my grocery bag holder using Jeni's tutorial finished though.. this is part of "Operation Organize Sewing Room" -- I'd love to get some real pictures but its just so yellow in there and no natural light makes pictures look terrible!! I'll keep trying..

I have about 4 quilt tops I want to finish this week, hopefully I can get them all done..

First up was my Orbit quilt top for the QAL. I'm very very behind, so I wanted to catch up! I decided to use prints from the Serenata line for this one since the blocks are big and will showcase them well!

These beauties also showed up on my door Monday.

We've got fat eighth, FQ and half yard bundles available in the shop!

A lot of headaches related to this..

Clearly lots of project ADD -- i'll have some finishes and more progress to show later this week

W.i.P.

I'm breaking away from the regularly posted Work in Progress post to give you some insight as to why my list has nothing done.. Last week I found myself 3 days before the end of the month with my "February Finishes" complete. Super exciting! I decided to do some "fun sewing" as opposed to the fun sewing i'm doing, but to meet a deadline..

I decided to try swoon again with my new Carnaby Street !
It's definitely motivating me tackle my March list so I can keep going!

In fact, that's exactly what I was doing Friday night/Saturday morning when there was a knock on my door Saturday mid morning.. The postman had a box.. that was supposed to be here on Tuesday February 19TH! It was 16 t-shirts to be made into a t-shirt quilt.. by MONDAY. Seriously hate how slow mail is out here.. anyway, they showed up and it was a whirlwind of sewing to get that one completed and out the door Monday morning (it was for a gift for a friend this Friday! fingers crossed it makes it in time)..

I did manage some beach time on Sunday, and made a new friend!

Crisis averted right, i'm feeling good and I have the next few days to work on my list...

Then, Monday morning I wake up to a text message from my dad that his cousin has a new granddaughter - my thoughts, awe how nice! - Immediately followed by another text.. "so can you make them a quilt?" Talk about NO warning! Mad dash sewing commences again, this time with LOTS of hsts.. UGH. I'm at the binding stage, thankfully, its a baby size so its small!

Fingers crossed I spend the rest of the week(end) working on things I had planned to actually work on.

As always, i'm linking up with Lee
:)

Don't forget Honey, Honey bundles are on sale until Friday!!
