I-Spy Magnifying Glass Pocket Tutorial

Materials-

-       10” zipper (or larger that can be cut to size)

-       (2) 10” x 6” piece of fabric

o   piece for front of pocket

o   piece for pocket lining

-       (2) 10” x 5” piece of fabric

o   piece for front of pocket

o   piece for pocket lining

-       9.5” x9.5” piece for pocket lining

-       fusible webbing (I use Pellon 805)

-       Scrap pieces for magnifying glass and lens

-       pins

-       zipper foot (optional)
     magnifying glass template

You’re going to want to cut your pieces and gather your supplies. I chose a solid for my font of the pocket and the floral for the lining.

Next, trace the magnifying glass picture onto the paper side of the fusible webbing (keep in mind you’ll have a mirror image so depending on which way you want your magnifying glass to face) Iron the fusible webbing (paper side up!) to the fabric you want to use for your magnifying glass and the lens (I chose charcoal and white) 

Once your webbing is ironed to the fabric, cut out your pieces and remove the paper from the webbing.

Take your 10”x 6” piece that you are using for the front of the pocket and iron your magnifying glass pieces to this piece. (I recommend placing your lens piece on top of the magnifying glass piece and ironing together)

Once these are ironed in place, stitch around the edges however you’d prefer to applique them in place (I used a straight stitch on the charcoal magnifying glass and a blanket stitch around the lens, just to switch it up!)

Use the method you are most comfortable with to install the zipper – there are some great tutorials (http://www.gussysews.com/2011/01/tutorial-how-to-sew-a-zippered-pouch/)

Once you have your zipper installed, trim it 9.5” x 9.5” – Take your lining piece that is 9.5” x 9.5”

Place these pieces (lining pieces right sides together) – in other words, put your zipper piece on top of the lining piece

Pin in place and sew around using a ¼ seam allowance.

You should have a complete pocket at this point.

Layout your quilt as you want it – You’re pocket will take the place of 4 charms

Sew your rows together as you normally would, and when you get to the rows where the pocket is sew the charms together before sewing the pocket.

Then, attach the 2 rows to one side of the pocket, iron away from the pocket, and do the same to the other side.

Line up the pocket the with rows as you would anything else…

 

And Voila! Completed quilt top.

Back, quilt and bind as you prefer.  Then fill your pocket with some magnifying glasses for the little ones to play with!!
